Getting started
The following sections describe how to get started with Sparkrock EdHRP.
User interface
The following sections describe the major components of the EdHRP interface.
Top bar
The top bar includes the following components:
Displays the current version of EdHRP.
Displays the environment to which you are logged in.
Displays the system date.
Opens the Employee Dashboard.
Opens a list of notifications. For example, you can view the status of a report that you have run.
Opens the EdHRP online help.
Displays the user and opens the Profile menu.
Displays the language and opens the Language menu.
Profile menu
From the Profile menu, you can navigate to Employee Personal Information and security pages, and sign out of the application.
Language menu
From the Language menu, you can specify whether EdHRP pages are to be displayed in English or French.
Main menu
To navigate within the Sparkrock EdHRP application, use the Main menu.
The Main menu includes the following tabs:

Some tabs may be hidden based on your security permissions. If a tab does not appear, you do not have access to that functionality. To request access, contact your system administrator.
HR tab
You can use the HR tab to view and perform HR functions.
Payroll tab
You can use the Payroll tab to view and perform payroll functions.
Employee tab
You can use the Employee tab to view and perform employee functions.
System tab
You can use the System tab to view and configure security, system settings, and tools.
Pages
On pages, you can view and edit information and perform actions.
Fields that are highlighted in yellow are mandatory.
Export
Various pages include an Export button that you can use to export data that appears on the page to Excel.
Background processes
A background process, also referred to as batch jobs or background tasks, are processes that run on a server without tying up the resources of your device. Sparkrock EdHRP uses background processes to perform intensive tasks that do not require any user input after the background process begins.
Examples of background processing include:
All reports
Allocating absence credits
Updating compensation records for all employees in an employee group, based on a new salary grid.
Producing pay stubs for a group of employees.
When a background process completes, Sparkrock EdHRP creates a notification.
Process Report
After submitting a background process, you can view its status and output on the Process Report page. Learn more in Process Report (HR) and Process Report (Payroll).
Effective dating
Effective dating is the principle that every change in Sparkrock EdHRP is tied to an exact date. The system uses those dates to determine what is paid, when, and at what rate. If a pay rate changes mid-period, earnings are prorated automatically from the effective date.
Most records follow the pattern of end-dating the current record, and then creating a record that starts the next day, which preserves the audit trail.
Trial mode and Update mode
Many background processes in Sparkrock EdHRP support two submit modes:
- Trial mode: Validates the input and produces reports without making any changes to the database. Run Trial mode first to check for errors before committing to the changes.
- Update mode: Performs the actual import or update and makes changes to the database.
It is recommended that you always run trial mode before running update mode.
